Monthly: the two-minute salt check

Open the lid. Salt should sit around half full and look loose. Below one-third, add a bag, pellets or solar crystals per the salt guide. Don’t fill to the brim: deep salt columns in humid closets are how bridges form.

While the lid’s open, push a broom handle into the salt. If it hits a hard crust with hollow space underneath, that’s a salt bridge, the tank looks full while the water below dissolves nothing. It’s the most common “softener stopped working” cause and a ten-minute fix.

Quarterly: test, don’t trust

Yearly: clean the brine tank

Once a year (twice on well water), run the salt down low, scoop out the sludge layer at the bottom, wash the tank with dish soap and a splash of unscented bleach, rinse thoroughly, and refill with fresh salt. The resin: protect the expensive part

The resin bed is the softener. On clean city water it lasts 10–15 years with no help. Two things kill it early: chlorine (slow oxidation, a carbon prefilter helps on heavily chlorinated supplies) and iron (binds to the beads; regeneration strips it incompletely). On any well water with iron, use an iron-formulated resin cleaner routinely and read the well water rules, above ~3 ppm, resin cleaner is a band-aid and an iron filter is the fix.

The bypass valve: know it before you need it
