About SoftenWise: How We Test Water Softeners
Who runs SoftenWise, how we verify softener specs and running costs, what we do and don't accept from brands, and how to reach us.
SoftenWise exists because water softeners are sold on two bad numbers: a nameplate grain capacity nobody should run, and an installed quote that varies 4× for the same hardware. We publish the numbers in between, the ones that actually predict what you’ll spend.
What we measure
Every product page on this site is built around the same spec set:

If a number can’t be verified, from the manufacturer’s published spec sheet, an NSF listing, or our own setup notes, we say so and give a range instead. You’ll find verify before you buy flags in our reviews where a spec rests on thinner evidence. We’d rather admit a gap than invent precision.
How we test
We combine four evidence streams: manufacturer spec sheets and manuals (the baseline), NSF/WQA certification databases (the independent check), hands-on setup and programming sessions with systems we buy or borrow (where the “30-minute install” claims meet reality), and documented owner reports, warranty threads, service records, longevity complaints, aggregated across sources and always attributed as reports, not our findings.
What we don’t do, honestly: we don’t run a certified water lab, and we don’t have every unit plumbed side by side for years. Where a claim would need that, long-term resin life, for instance, we present manufacturer data and owner history separately and label both.
What we will never do
- Accept payment for a ranking, review, or “best” placement.
- Let an affiliate program decide what gets recommended, several top picks pay us nothing.
- Make health claims. Softening is a plumbing decision; sodium questions belong with your clinician.
- Publish a spec we can’t source.
Our revenue is affiliate commissions, disclosed on every page that carries them (full disclosure). Reader trust is worth more than any single commission, that math only works one way.

How does SoftenWise make money?
Affiliate commissions on some outbound links, if you buy through them, the retailer pays us a percentage at no extra cost to you. Brands cannot pay for placement, rankings, or review outcomes, and plenty of our top picks have no affiliate program at all. Details in the affiliate disclosure.
Do you accept free products from manufacturers?
If a manufacturer sends a unit, we say so on the review, the unit doesn't go back, and it doesn't buy a verdict, the spec table gets built from the same public evidence either way. Most of what we evaluate is bought or examined at retail.
Can I suggest a product for review?
Yes, reader requests genuinely shape the queue. Send the brand and model through our contact email and we'll add it to the research list. Reviews follow the same verified-specs format whether or not the brand has an affiliate program.
